The Coherence Relation

Coherence $ \Xi $ is the weighted mean of alignment scores $a_i$, reduced by unresolved contradiction $ \Delta $, then contained by Ethical Law $ \mathcal{E}_{9} $. The weights $ \omega_i $ are declared, contextual values rather than universal constants.

Pairwise coherence compares each declared layer $X_i$ with every other layer. The similarity function may be qualitative or quantitative, but its meaning and scale must be declared.

Plain Language

What Equation 13 means.

A system loses coherence when its words say one thing, its actions do another, its evidence points elsewhere, its consequences are ignored, or its ethics collapse under pressure. A coherent system does not require every element to match perfectly. It requires contradictions to be visible, weighted, tested, and repaired rather than hidden.

Alignment

Intention, language, evidence, structure, action, and consequence point in compatible directions.

Difference

Distinct perspectives may remain coherent when their boundaries and evidence states are visible.

Contradiction

A conflict does not destroy coherence automatically, but hidden or unresolved conflict lowers it.

Correction

Coherence rises when the system can admit error, change its form, and preserve revision history.

Coherence Dimensions

1 Evidence

Do the claims match the available witness, measurements, sources, and limits?

2 Intention

Does the declared purpose match the actual design and use?

3 Language

Do the words, labels, symbols, and tone accurately describe the field?

4 Structure

Do the parts, links, controls, dependencies, and boundaries support the stated function?

5 Action

Do the operator’s choices agree with the declared method and values?

6 Timing

Do sequence, delay, duration, and revision match the claimed causal story?

7 Consequence

Do actual effects support, weaken, or contradict the intended result?

8 Memory

Does the current version preserve relevant history, correction, and prior failure?

9 Ethics

Does the field preserve consent, dignity, truth, proportion, responsibility, and stop conditions?

Working States

How to read a coherence result.

0.80–1.00

High coherence

The major layers align, contradictions are visible and bounded, and the system remains revisable.

0.60–0.79

Operational coherence

The system can function, but known mismatches require monitoring or repair.

0.40–0.59

Strained coherence

Important conflicts exist among purpose, evidence, structure, language, action, or consequence.

0.20–0.39

Fragmented field

The system may still contain useful parts, but its current form should not be trusted as a whole.

0.00–0.19

Collapsed coherence

Contradiction, harm, hidden framing, or structural failure overwhelms alignment.

UNSCORED

Insufficient record

A numeric result should not be invented when the source field, weights, or comparison method are undefined.

Local and Global Coherence

A part can work while the whole fails.

Local coherence

A single page, component, argument, subsystem, or session is internally aligned.

Global incoherence

The local success conflicts with the larger system, ethics, evidence, or consequence.

Global coherence

Major local systems remain compatible with one another and with the declared field boundary.

Coherent disagreement

Different models or witnesses may remain compatible when their domains, evidence, and limits are explicit.

Averaging locally coherent parts does not guarantee a coherent whole. Conflicts between subsystems must also enter the calculation.

Contradiction Map

Incoherence should be located, not merely declared.

Claim ↔ evidence

The statement is stronger, narrower, or different from what the record supports.

Intention ↔ action

The declared purpose conflicts with the actual method or operator behavior.

Design ↔ consequence

The system produces effects contrary to its stated function.

Policy ↔ enforcement

The written rule and its actual application diverge.

Memory ↔ revision

The current story excludes earlier failures, corrections, or conflicting records.

Ethics ↔ power

Consent, transparency, or correction disappears when authority is challenged.

Coherence Protocol

From declared field to revision-ready score.

1 · Define the field

Name the system, artifact, claim, project, relationship, session, or decision being evaluated.

2 · Declare the dimensions

Select the evidence, intention, language, structure, action, timing, consequence, memory, and ethics layers that apply.

3 · Preserve the source record

Collect the relevant documents, witness, measurements, settings, actions, and outcomes.

4 · Assign transparent weights

State why some dimensions matter more in the present use.

5 · Score each alignment

Use a declared qualitative or quantitative scale and record the reason for each score.

6 · Map contradictions

Locate conflicts among claims, evidence, behavior, timing, consequence, and ethics.

7 · Apply contradiction penalty

Reduce the field score only for unresolved contradiction, not for difference that is already bounded and explained.

8 · Compare local and global results

Check whether strong parts conflict with one another at the system level.

9 · Define repair actions

Change language, structure, evidence, process, timing, boundary, or ethical safeguards.

10 · Recalculate and preserve Remnant

Version the score, retain the strongest surviving structure, and keep correction visible.

An artifact registry entry.

Declared identity

The artifact has a code, name, materials, class, status, scroll, images, and claim boundary.

Evidence alignment

Materials and condition match the actual object and photographs.

Language alignment

Mythic and symbolic language remains distinct from physical or measurable claims.

Status alignment

Available, Reserved, Gifted, Personal, Archived, or Coming Soon matches the real state.

Ethical alignment

Price, safety, ownership, availability, provenance, and limitations are represented honestly.

Coherence result

The registry is coherent when material fact, symbolic meaning, status, images, and stewardship agree.

Worked Example 2

A theory site with shared navigation.

Declared function

The mobile menu button is meant to reveal the primary navigation.

Markup alignment

The button includes data-nav-toggle, aria-expanded, and a matching navigation ID.

Behavior contradiction

The button appears but does nothing because shared JavaScript or CSS does not complete the interaction.

Global clue

The same defect across many pages points to a shared asset rather than page-specific HTML.

Repair

Update shared JavaScript and CSS, then verify keyboard, touch, resize, close, and accessibility states.

Coherence result

Visual design, semantics, interaction, and accessibility align only when the button performs its stated function.

Worked Example 3

A field claim and its evidence.

Claim

“The artifact generated a unique field that caused the instrument response.”

Observation

An instrument response occurred near an artifact containing known active components.

Contradiction

The claim asserts uniqueness and cause beyond what the current controls establish.

Repair

Narrow the wording, isolate components, repeat the test, and preserve known mechanisms.

Revised claim

“The instrument responded near the artifact under the recorded conditions; the contribution of each component remains under test.”

Coherence result

The revised language better aligns observation, uncertainty, mechanism, and future testing.

Worked Example 4

A public message about accountability.

Declared intention

Expose a harmful pattern and demand correction.

Language test

Does the message distinguish documented action, interpretation, motive, and unresolved claim?

Action test

Does the post preserve relevant evidence while avoiding unnecessary private exposure?

Consequence test

Could the wording create harm unrelated to the legitimate accountability purpose?

Ethics test

Are correction, context, dignity, proportion, and affected children protected?

Coherence result

The message is stronger when its fire, evidence, purpose, and ethical boundary move together.

Scope

What Equation 13 does and does not do.

Difference is treated as incoherence, and dissent is removed rather than examined.

A precise number is displayed without defining components, weights, scale, or evidence.

Local success hiding global harm

A subsystem works efficiently while damaging the larger field.

Ethical exclusion

The system appears coherent only because consent, dignity, responsibility, and consequence were never scored.

Ethical Boundary

Coherence cannot excuse harm.

A system does not become acceptable merely because it is orderly, stable, persuasive, or internally aligned. If it depends on coercion, deception, exploitation, hidden harm, or blocked correction, Ethical Law lowers or halts its operational coherence.

Consent must enter the score

A system cannot call itself coherent while affected people lack a real ability to refuse or stop.

Consequences must enter the score

Intended benefit cannot erase actual harm.

Correction must remain possible

A protected score that cannot be challenged is not a living measure.

Difference must remain visible

Coherence should organize plurality, not erase it.
