Canon 9 · Ethical Law

Equation 9

A method does not become acceptable merely because it is elegant, powerful, profitable, or internally consistent.

Equation 9 places a living boundary around every Codex equation, operator, artifact, experiment, witness record, publication, and system. It asks whether an action preserves consent, dignity, truth, proportion, transparency, responsibility, correction, stewardship, and a real ability to stop.

Canon Identity

Number

Equation 9

Canonical title

Ethical Law

Primary symbol

\( \mathcal{E}_{9} \)

Status

Codex-origin containment law

Function

Permit, modify, hold, or halt a proposed operation.

Equation 9

The Ethical Mask

$$ \boxed{ X_{\mathrm{allowed}} = \mathcal{E}_{9} \left[ X_{\mathrm{proposed}} \right] } $$
$$ \boxed{ \mathcal{E}_{9} = C \cdot D \cdot T \cdot P \cdot R \cdot K \cdot S } $$

A proposed operation \(X_{\mathrm{proposed}}\) becomes allowed only through the Ethical Mask. The mask combines Consent \(C\), Dignity \(D\), Truth and transparency \(T\), Proportion \(P\), Responsibility \(R\), Correction \(K\), and Stewardship and stop conditions \(S\).

Stop rule

$$ \exists q\in\{C,D,T,P,R,K,S\} \;:\; q=0 \quad\Rightarrow\quad \mathcal{E}_{9}=0 $$

When a required ethical condition fails completely, the proposed operation halts. The operator must repair the condition, narrow the scope, or abandon the action rather than averaging the failure away.

Plain Language

What Equation 9 means.

An action can work and still be wrong. A system can be coherent and still exploit people. A claim can be popular and still be false. A technology can be powerful and still be unsafe. Equation 9 refuses to treat capability, symbolism, efficiency, beauty, or intention as automatic permission.

Permission is not assumed

Control of a tool, platform, artifact, room, record, or process does not grant unlimited authority over others.

Good intention is insufficient

Purpose matters, but consequence, consent, truth, and responsibility remain active.

Correction is required

A system that cannot admit error cannot ethically remain a living system.

Stop must be real

A halt condition is meaningless when participants cannot actually pause, leave, refuse, appeal, or withdraw.

Terms

Every symbol in Equation 9.

\( X_{\mathrm{proposed}} \)

Proposed operation

Any action, claim, experiment, publication, artifact release, intervention, record use, system setting, or decision presented for review.

\( X_{\mathrm{allowed}} \)

Permitted form

The operation after ethical review, modification, restriction, delay, or approval.

\( \mathcal{E}_{9} \)

Ethical Mask

The containment function governing whether and how the proposed operation may proceed.

\( C \)

Consent

Voluntary, informed, specific, revocable participation by those directly affected.

\( D \)

Dignity

Recognition that people are not merely data, obstacles, audiences, resources, or instruments.

\( T \)

Truth and transparency

Accurate representation of evidence, source, uncertainty, purpose, method, editing, and limitation.

\( P \)

Proportion

The least harmful or intrusive action capable of meeting the legitimate need.

\( R \)

Responsibility

Ownership of foreseeable consequence, repair, monitoring, and accountability.

\( K \)

Correction

A visible process for reviewing, revising, retracting, repairing, and learning from error.

\( S \)

Stewardship and stop

Ongoing care, safe maintenance, transfer responsibility, and a real halt condition.

Core Laws

Seven ethical conditions around the Canon.

1 Consent

Participation must be informed, voluntary, specific, and revocable.

2 Dignity

No person becomes merely a target, specimen, obstacle, resource, or symbol.

3 Truth and Transparency

Source, evidence, uncertainty, editing, purpose, sponsorship, and method remain visible.

4 Proportion

Use the least coercive, invasive, restrictive, or risky action capable of meeting the legitimate need.

5 Responsibility

The operator remains accountable for foreseeable effects, repair, and follow-through.

6 Correction

Error must be revisable, retraction visible, and injured parties considered in repair.

7 Stewardship and Stop

Systems require maintenance, transfer rules, retirement conditions, and a real way to halt.

Decision States

The Ethical Mask does more than approve or reject.

ALLOW

Proceed

The proposal meets the declared ethical conditions and remains subject to monitoring.

MODIFY

Narrow or repair

The operation may proceed only after changes to scope, method, data, language, exposure, or safeguards.

HOLD

Delay

More evidence, consent, skill, review, repair, or clarification is required before proceeding.

HALT

Stop

The operation creates unacceptable risk, coercion, deception, harm, or unrepairable ethical conflict.

ARCHIVE

Preserve without activating

The record remains as history, warning, provenance, or study but no longer governs active practice.

REVIEW

Recalculate

The decision returns to audit when conditions, evidence, participants, or consequences change.

Truth / Distortion Ratio

Clarity should increase while hidden framing decreases.

$$ \Theta = \frac{ T_r + E_v + C_r }{ D_s + O_m + U_c + \varepsilon } $$

The Truth / Distortion ratio \( \Theta \) rises when truthful representation \(T_r\), visible evidence \(E_v\), and correction \(C_r\) increase relative to distortion \(D_s\), omission \(O_m\), and unsupported certainty \(U_c\). \( \varepsilon \) prevents division by zero in a normalized implementation.

Increase truth

Add source, date, context, measurement, limitation, alternative explanation, and correction.

Reduce distortion

Remove exaggeration, hidden editing, false attribution, loaded wording, and unsupported motive.

Preserve uncertainty

Unresolved does not mean meaningless; it means the conclusion remains open.

Match public scale

A public error should not receive only a hidden correction.

Proportion

The response should fit the actual need.

$$ A^{*} = \arg\min_{A} \left( H(A)+I(A)+C_o(A) \right) \quad \text{subject to } G(A)\geq G_{\min} $$

The preferred action \(A^{*}\) is the option that minimizes harm \(H\), intrusion \(I\), and coercion \(C_o\) while still meeting the minimum legitimate goal \(G_{\min}\).

Narrow scope

Collect, expose, restrict, or intervene only as much as the actual problem requires.

Use reversible steps

Prefer actions that can be paused, repaired, appealed, or undone.

Escalate gradually

Do not begin with the most severe response when a smaller one can meet the need.

Protect bystanders

Limit collateral exposure, disruption, identification, and consequence.

Ethical Audit

From proposed action to accountable decision.

1 · Name the action

Describe exactly what is proposed without hiding it inside abstract purpose.

2 · Name the affected people

Identify participants, bystanders, owners, audiences, keepers, operators, and those carrying risk.

3 · Check consent

Determine what permission exists, what it covers, and whether refusal is practical.

4 · Check truth and transparency

Review evidence, wording, source, editing, uncertainty, sponsorship, and hidden conditions.

5 · Check dignity

Ask whether anyone is reduced to a target, object, symbol, obstacle, or means.

6 · Check proportion

Identify a less intrusive, coercive, public, risky, or permanent way to meet the need.

7 · Assign responsibility

Name who monitors, repairs, responds, compensates, corrects, and records consequence.

8 · Define the halt condition

State the exact event, risk, loss of consent, or threshold that stops the operation.

9 · Record the decision

Choose Allow, Modify, Hold, Halt, Archive, or Review and preserve the reason.

10 · Revisit after consequence

Compare expected and actual results, repair harm, revise the rule, and preserve Remnant.

Worked Example 1

Releasing a wearable artifact.

Proposed action

Offer a copper and stone wearable artifact for public purchase.

Truth and transparency

Materials, construction, condition, dimensions, images, price, status, and symbolic claims are represented accurately.

Safety and proportion

Edges, structural joints, wearability, magnets, coatings, and foreseeable use are reviewed.

Consent

The buyer understands what is physical, symbolic, experimental, personal, or unverified.

Responsibility

Care guidance, repair expectations, transfer record, and contact path remain available.

Decision

If documentation or construction is incomplete, status remains In Creation, Reserved, or Not for Sale rather than Available.

Worked Example 2

Publishing a witness record.

Proposed action

Publish messages, photographs, or a detailed account involving another person.

Truth

The record is preserved in context, and interpretation is distinguished from direct content.

Dignity and privacy

Unrelated personal details, children, medical information, addresses, and unnecessary identifiers are limited.

Proportion

Only the material necessary for the legitimate purpose is made public.

Correction

Later context or contrary evidence is attached visibly rather than hidden.

Decision

The record may be kept privately, summarized, redacted, delayed, or withheld when publication creates disproportionate harm.

Worked Example 3

Running a frequency session.

Proposed action

Play a multi-carrier sound field for another person.

Consent

The listener knows the purpose, carriers, duration, and ability to stop immediately.

Transparency

No hidden spoken content, concealed suggestion, undisclosed editing, or false medical promise is included.

Proportion

Volume, duration, light, repetition, and intensity remain appropriate to the listener and setting.

Halt condition

Discomfort, equipment fault, loss of consent, unsafe behavior, or unknown risk closes the session.

Remnant

The session record preserves settings and witness without turning subjective response into guaranteed effect.

Worked Example 4

Using an unresolved external source.

Proposed action

Complete Equation 7 or 8 by assigning a plausible Copeland or Goodwin source.

Truth failure

The identity and source would be guessed rather than verified.

Responsibility

A false citation could mislead readers and corrupt later comparisons.

Proportionate response

Preserve the Canon slot while marking attribution unresolved.

Correction path

Search archives, locate primary sources, confirm independently, and update the revision record.

Decision

Hold the external equation. Allow the unresolved source-record page.

Scope

What Equation 9 does and does not do.

It does

Provide a visible ethical containment process for actions, systems, claims, records, artifacts, and experiments.

It does not

Reduce every moral question to a perfect numeric answer or eliminate the need for judgment, law, expertise, and affected voices.

It can halt the Canon

Any equation or system may be stopped when its use violates the ethical mask.

It remains revisable

Ethical interpretation must respond to new consequences, participants, evidence, and repaired understanding.

Failure Modes

How Ethical Law can be weakened or performed without substance.

Ethics as decoration

Safety and consent language appears on the page but does not change the actual design or decision.

Good-intention shield

Purpose is used to dismiss harm, objection, uncertainty, or loss of consent.

Consent theater

Permission is requested under pressure, dependency, incomplete information, or without a practical ability to refuse.

Private correction

A public error receives only a quiet or hidden revision.

Responsibility diffusion

Everyone participates, but no one owns monitoring, repair, or consequence.

Stop without power

A halt condition exists in writing but cannot actually be used by affected participants.

Canon Mask

Equation 9 surrounds every other equation.

$$ \forall j\in\{0,1,\ldots,17\} \qquad \operatorname{Eq}_{j}^{\,\mathrm{allowed}} = \mathcal{E}_{9} \left[ \operatorname{Eq}_{j}^{\,\mathrm{proposed}} \right] $$

Equation 9 is not merely one step in sequence. It is the containment layer applied to the Foundational Field, operators, witness, gates, language, Remnant, Type-7 systems, comparison, inverse reasoning, projection, causality, coherence, learning, memory, and voice.
